Although they are 25-year members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, Ski’s Painting proved there are always new ways to participate in the organization. At the 2nd Annual Paint Ball Award Ceremony in Charleston, Ski’s was presented with their first PDCA National Industry Award: The KILZ Picture it Painted Perfectly Award for a Commercial Interior project.
“It’s an honor, absolutely,” says Mike Barrett, VP of Operations at Ski’s Painting. “You don’t necessarily go into the job expecting an award. We thought it was a high-profile job, so when we won we felt honored. But we wanted to showcase the great work we did so we thought, ‘Just do it.’ We felt honored when we actually won.”
“Historically we haven’t taken the opportunity to brag about the work we do,” chimes in Jesse Ficks, VP of Sales at Ski’s Painting. “It was rewarding for our team to re-hash the project and put it out there and be recognized.”
The two say they have yet to realize the full potential of the award, however the feeling that comes with being recognized by like-minded professionals in the industry is validation that they are doing something right. That validation is something they share with their team.
“It’s really a chance to celebrate the project with the team,” says Matt. “Even if you don’t submit anything, the exercise of evaluating the project is really helpful. And even if we didn’t win at National we would still take this information and use it as a framework for other local or regional competitions. We’re really trying to strengthen our portfolio and the awards process helps with that.”
Starbucks’ fifth roasting plant received national news coverage [http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-07-13/starbucks-plans-fifth-u-s-roasting-factory-by-2014] which put extra pressure on Ski’s to do well. With a PDCA National Industry Award and a local award to show off, it’s undeniable that they did.
“The award is a great conversation starter, especially in our region. It’s Starbucks and people have read about it and and we are able to tell them ‘That was us.’ It lets our customers know they’re working with the right company.”
