PDCA Member Spotlight: Alpine Painting

The 2015 Painting and Decorating EXPO came to a close with the 2nd Annual Paint Ball, an awards ceremony hosted by PDCA that celebrates outstanding work in the painting and decorating industry. The big winner of the night, taking home awards in four different categories, was Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors, Inc. However, you might not get the answer you expect when you ask Dave Scaturro, Sales and Marketing Director of Alpine Painting, what it means for his company to win so many industry awards.

“For us, we don’t necessarily use awards to get more jobs,” says Dave. “You don’t get the job just by saying ‘I won an award.’ The reason why we love to win awards is not only because it sets you apart from the competition, but because it is a great way to build case studies of your work.” Alpine Painting has a growing case study library that is housed on their website. Many of these projects are also PDCA Industry Award winning projects. This gives potential clients the opportunity to review past work that Alpine Painting has done.

“The awards help you evaluate complex jobs. You can break them out into different components so when you have potential clients you can let them read through the case study of a previous job - how long did it take, what was the bidding process like, what were the safety concerns and environmental controls. It starts by having a clear process for how to complete your job safely and then documenting everything. The award is the cherry on the top that says your peers looked at the job and think it was job done the right way.”

Applying for a PDCA Industry Award means certain qualifications need to be met. Projects are evaluated on their ability to meet these requirements and are then reviewed by a panel of peers. The level of detail that goes into applying for an award can be intimidating to some, but Dave says there is good reason to take the time to apply. Industry awards are an opportunity to set your company apart from the competition and earn validation from peers.

“If you don’t do it, your opportunities [to promote your award] are zero,” says Dave. “We promote it as much as possible to stand out from the pack. You don’t want to be viewed as just a commodity. So many companies nowadays say the can do everything, but how often can you say you are a national award winner recognized by one of the oldest and most relevant painting organizations in the world.”

Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors, Inc. has been a PDCA Member for almost 30 years. The company has been very active in the PDCA Commercial Forum - Dave was the PDCA Commercial Forum Chair at one point - and they love interacting with other peers and professionals to learn best business practices. You can meet Dave and other professional contractors at the Commercial Forum Conference in Napa Valley September 16-18{ 2015.
