PDCA Commercial Forum Launches Initiative to Revitalize PDCA Standards

It was standing room only for the course "Improving Commercial Painting Subcontracts and Technical Specifications," hosted by the PDCA Commercial Forum at the 2015 Painting and Decorating EXPO. A panel presentation featuring representatives from AIA, CSI, MPI, FCA, the PDCA Standards Committee, commercial contractors, and of course the PDCA Commercial Forum gathered to discuss how to get standards included in technical specifications prepared by AIA architects and other various specification writers.

According to Ronald Yarbrough, President of the Commercial Forum and moderator of the panel, the discussion was a huge success, bringing to light several key ideas:

  1. AIA doesn't site the PDCA Standards as a whole because they reference a wide variety of topics, too wide for any particular scope. In future, the PDCA Standards should be presented to specifiers as groups of standards under a similar category
  2. The PDCA Standards Committee and Commercial Forum should market the benefit of standards at upcoming AIA and CSI conventions.
  3. Standards Committee and Commercial Forum need to more clearly communicate the benefits to end-users and specifiers how standards can help improve the end product.

The PDCA Commercial Forum, in cooperation with the PDCA Standards Committee, is exploring new standards, programs, and guides for development at the Commercial Forum Conference in Napa Valley, CA September 2015.
